Course Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support and protect children and young people who are at risk of harm. This work occurs within legislative and policy frameworks and carries a duty of care responsibility. 

This Unit applies to employees in a range of job roles providing services to children and young people, including those personnel who provide care in community services and health contexts.

  • Identifying children and young people at risk of harm or abuse
  • How to observe signs and symptoms of harm or abuse
  • Asking open, non-leading and direct questions
  • Responding to disclosure in accordance with state legislative responsibilities
  • Employing child-focused work practices
  • Communication and information gathering techniques
  • Acting within your own level of responsibility, work role, state legislation and service policies and procedures
  • Recording relevant specific and general circumstances surrounding risk of harm
  • Recording and reporting risk of harm indicators
  • Non-judgmental report writing
  • Working collaboratively with relevant agencies
  • Protecting the rights of children and young people
  • Employing nurturing practices
  • Observing professional Boundaries
  • Recognising and reporting indicators for potential ethical concern
